Getting rid of Camel Crickets & House Centipedes on Long Island NY

A lot of Long Island NY customers call late fall and early winter saying “what are these disgusting, long legged, pre-historic bugs in my house?”

These creepy looking pests are actually the Camel Cricket (some people refer to them as Cave Crickets) and the House Centipede. Although they can be found indoors year round most people call about them in the late fall or winter months. This may be due to the fact that they like dark damp areas such as basements and crawl spaces where they tend to live, breed and hang out. As temperatures cool off in these areas they may be attracted to the warmer temperature of the upper floors.

The Camel Cricket is a large, rounded back cricket which can hop fairly high scaring people as they walk through their basements. This cricket makes no noise, unlike the field cricket which is the cricket you hear in late summer and early fall on the outside of your house. Camel Crickets eat pretty much anything organic they can find.

The House Centipede has long spindly legs almost like a spider that project from the sides. They move very quickly and appear to have come out of nowhere also startling many homeowners. These pests are predators and feed on other insects such as silverfish, carpet beetle larvae, cockroaches, spiders and other small arthropods.

Control:

Prevention and harborage elimination is the best way to control these pests. First survey the lower perimeter of the structure looking for cracks and crevices where these pests can enter. Caulk and seal any openings that are found. Make sure all windows have tight fitting screens and are in good repair. All crawl space vents need to be screened and all doors should be fitted with a door sweep. Install weather-stripping along the bottom of house and garage doors so that it fits tightly against the threshold.

Make sure that the soil is graded in such a way so that water drains away from the house. Eliminating moisture with a dehumidifier is highly recommended.

Place sticky boards such as those used to capture cockroaches and mice, in garages, along basement perimeters and behind appliances to catch crickets that enter your home. Since both of these pests will feed on other arthropods then it would advantageous to eliminate other pests such as sow bugs, spiders, field crickets and cockroaches. If these pests have already entered and are breeding in the structure then there may be a need for a chemical application. This application is best handled by a certified pest management professional.
