5 Easy Tips to Eradicating Bed Bugs

It’s that time of the year again - spring is almost here. Imagine while doing your spring cleaning, you discover a bed bug under your sheets. It’s the first time you’ve encountered it so you didn’t pay much attention to it. However the next day, you start to notice some red tiny blotches on your skin. You instantly suspect that it was another insect that bit you until you saw the culprit right there.

The Bed Bug

The bed bug is a common household monster that many homeowners wished they never faced. Bed bugs are parasitic insects that prefer to feed on human blood and can live in pretty much any kind of space inside your home. These pests like warm as well dark places, much like bedrooms.

Letting these critters stay in your home pose a threat to you and your family. To help you eradicate bed bugs, here are 5 easy tips you can follow.

1. Pay attention to your laundry. Whether you have a big or small closet, you have to check every piece of clothing you have and have them cleaned. Send them to the laundromat and wash them on hot then dry them until they are clean. After which, put them on a tightly sealed bad to prevent from getting infected again.

2. Get rid of infected furniture. Sadly, some of your furniture will be thrown out when they have been infected for a long time. They can become a haven for bed bugs, which makes it difficult to clean. Bag the bed if you’ve had it for a long time. Buy a new one and cover it with plastic.

3. Prepare the rubbing alcohol. Spraying rubbing alcohol on bed bugs is a cheap and temporary thing you can do to stop bed bugs. Be sure to get 91% rubbing alcohol and spray it on bugs and other creepy crawlies. You can spray this liberally on your mattress and other furniture since it dries quickly. Rubbing alcohol can kill bed bugs upon contact.

4. Thermal radiation for bugs. If you have tried everything in the book and yet found no solution to your bed bug problems, try this solution. Thermal radiation as a solution to your bed bug problems is the way to go if your bed bugs seem to be immune to the old solutions you used to do. Heating is becoming a popular solution among many homeowners because of its effectiveness and non-toxic features.

5. Contact your trusted local bed bug exterminator. Contacting your trusted local bed bug exterminator is the fastest way to handle your bed bug problems. They can get the job done right on the first time so this way you don’t waste time and solve the problem immediately.

What is the Best Way to Kill Bed Bugs on Long Island New York!

Exterminators are often asked “What is the best way to get rid of bed bugs?”

Bedbug Feeding

Bedbug Feeding

The answer may be different methods depending upon the treatment environment. There are basically three main treatment techniques that exterminators employ or at least a combination of these techniques.

The first way would be a full premise bed bug heat treatment where the home or office environment temperature is raised to over 120 degrees F for several hours thus destroying all the life stages of the bed bugs including their eggs. This is the most convenient and quickest way to ensure bed bugs are eliminated in a “green” manner.

The second method would be to use Cryonite or the bed bug freezing method to eliminate the bed bugs. This involves using a Cryonite machine that turns CO2 into a snow like consistency that you apply to the bed bugs and their eggs.

The final type of treatment would be a bed bug chemical treatment. This is where insecticides are applied to surfaces and injected into cracks and crevices to eventually poison the bed bugs. These chemicals can be in the form of liquids, aerosols and powders. Physical types of pest control treatments such as steamers and vacuums may be used in conjunction with the chemical treatment. It is usually recommended that bed bug mattress encasements be installed on the mattresses and box springs to minimize the use of chemicals in and around the beds.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these types of treatments which we will try to explain below.

Chemical Treatment

Least Convenient. Lots of preparation and laundering of clothes and bedding. Items cannot be returned to shelves and dressers until house is declared free of bed bugs.

Most treatments take 2-4 weeks to be determined bed bug free. At least one follow-up inspection / treatment is recommended

A lot of chemicals are usually needed to achieve control. These chemicals will need to be placed inside furniture. Bed frames and wall voids.

30 days to 6 months residual control depending upon which products are used.

Cannot be used in schools unless there is a 72 hour reentry period.

Limited use is health related environments. Limited use for residences where there are people with health problems and new born children.

Although not inexpensive it can be the least costly way to treat for bed bugs. Usually mattress encasements are recommended with chemical applications which will raise the cost. There will be a big laundry bill and lots of preparation time required.

Other methods offer a longer residual control which can be advantageous in multi-tenant dwellings or where re-infestation is likely to occur.
